Alkaline earth metal

Group 2 — beryllium through radium — carries two valence electrons and, with them, a 2+ habit. Harder and denser than their Group 1 neighbours but still water-reactive (calcium fizzes; magnesium needs steam), these metals run the practical world: magnesium in aircraft alloys, calcium in bones and cement.
