Uses of Chlorine (Cl) in Everyday Life

Quick answer

From the Chlorine page's study notes: Chlorine (Cl) serves in disinfection, water treatment and everyday compounds. The full list, with Bangladesh examples, sits below.

Teachers call it "one fact, fully handled" — exactly what this page does for Chlorine. The answer sits at the top in bold; scroll for the working, the shell-by-shell breakdown and the two questions students ask most. Need the whole picture instead — history, characteristics, uses, exam questions? The full Chlorine page is one click away.

Chlorine at work around you

Every use below comes straight from the full Chlorine study page, where each point also carries the chemistry behind it and an exam-style question. Skim the list here; open the full page when revision time comes.

Uses of Chlorine in the study notes

  • Disinfecting drinking water — a few parts per million of chlorine kill the germs of cholera and typhoid; city waterworks in Dhaka and worldwide dose it every day.
  • Bleaching powder [Ca(OCl)2\mathrm{Ca(OCl)_{2}}] for cotton yarn and fabric — the workhorse of textile and garment-washing factories — and for disinfecting drains and ponds.
  • PVC plastic (polyvinyl chloride) — water pipes, electric-cable insulation, blood bags, raincoats and footwear are all children of chlorine chemistry.
  • The chlor-alkali industry splits brine into chlorine, hydrogen and caustic soda (NaOH\mathrm{NaOH}), the feedstock for soap, bleach, hydrochloric acid and countless other chemicals.

Where you meet it

  • Every grain of table salt is sodium chloride — half chlorine by mass; a sachet of ORS saline carries potassium chloride as well.
  • The sharp "swimming-pool smell" is chlorine chemistry attacking germs and sweat in the water.
  • The faint whiff from a freshly opened tap, or from cloth washed with bleaching powder, is dilute chlorine doing its job.

Why is Chlorine important in Bangladesh?

The full study page connects Chlorine to Bangladeshi life — school labs, local industries, health and the NCTB syllabus. This quick-answer page is the fast summary; the element page is the full story.

Where will I meet Chlorine in the NCTB exam?

Questions on Chlorine's uses are a recurring pattern in Class 9–10 and HSC chemistry. The element page ends with six exam-style questions in both languages — practise those and this pattern stops costing marks.
