Uses of Nickel (Ni) in Everyday Life

Quick answer

From the Nickel page's study notes: Nickel (Ni) serves in alloys, infrastructure and the technologies of daily life. The full list, with Bangladesh examples, sits below.

This is the fast lane: one page, one fact, zero digressions. Read the quick answer, check the table, and if your exam needs the full derivation, the sections below walk through it step by step — in Bangla and English, like every page here. Need the whole picture instead — history, characteristics, uses, exam questions? The full Nickel page is one click away.

Nickel at work around you

Every use below comes straight from the full Nickel study page, where each point also carries the chemistry behind it and an exam-style question. Skim the list here; open the full page when revision time comes.

Uses of Nickel in the study notes

  • Stainless steel — adding about 8% nickel to iron-chromium steel keeps it rust-free, tough and easy to shape: the cutlery, kitchen sinks, hospital instruments and water tanks of Bangladesh.
  • Nichrome heating wire — a nickel-chromium alloy glows red-hot in immersion rods, electric kettles and toasters without burning out.
  • Coins — cupro-nickel, a 75:25 copper-nickel alloy, has coined the world’s small change for over a century; the American five-cent piece is literally called “a nickel”.
  • Rechargeable batteries and catalysts — NiMH cells power remotes and torches, while finely divided nickel catalyses the hydrogenation that hardens liquid oil into vanaspati ghee.

Where you meet it

  • The stainless-steel spoon at breakfast — iron and chromium with a working dose of nickel to keep it spotless.
  • A silvery bathroom tap or bicycle bell — most “shiny steel” fittings are nickel-plated underneath.
  • The glowing coil of an immersion rod turning a bucket of cold water steaming in minutes.

Why is Nickel important in Bangladesh?

The full study page connects Nickel to Bangladeshi life — school labs, local industries, health and the NCTB syllabus. This quick-answer page is the fast summary; the element page is the full story.

Where will I meet Nickel in the NCTB exam?

Questions on Nickel's uses are a recurring pattern in Class 9–10 and HSC chemistry. The element page ends with six exam-style questions in both languages — practise those and this pattern stops costing marks.
