Uses of Uranium (U) in Everyday Life
From the Uranium page's study notes: Uranium (U) serves in alloys, infrastructure and the technologies of daily life. The full list, with Bangladesh examples, sits below.
Teachers call it "one fact, fully handled" — exactly what this page does for Uranium. The answer sits at the top in bold; scroll for the working, the shell-by-shell breakdown and the two questions students ask most. Need the whole picture instead — history, characteristics, uses, exam questions? The full Uranium page is one click away.
Uranium at work around you
Every use below comes straight from the full Uranium study page, where each point also carries the chemistry behind it and an exam-style question. Skim the list here; open the full page when revision time comes.
Uses of Uranium in the study notes
- Nuclear electricity: uranium dioxide pellets enriched to 3–5% U-235 power reactors worldwide — including the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant at Ishwardi, Pabna, whose two Russian VVER-1200 units are Bangladesh’s first.
- Naval propulsion: submarines and aircraft carriers cruise for years between refuellings on compact highly enriched uranium cores.
- Medicine and research: reactors running on uranium fuel brew medical isotopes such as molybdenum-99 — the parent of technetium-99m used in hospital scans — and supply neutron beams for materials science.
- Depleted uranium, the almost-pure U-238 tailings of enrichment: its staggering density makes it ideal for aircraft counterweights, gamma-radiation shielding and armour-piercing ammunition.
- Reading Earth’s clock: the uranium–lead decay clock sealed inside zircon crystals fixed the age of Earth’s oldest known minerals at about 4,400 million years.
Where you meet it
- Every Rooppur bulletin — turbine tests, fuel loading, 2,400 megawatts bound for the national grid — is Bangladesh’s own living uranium story on the news.
- The granite of Dinajpur’s Maddhapara hard-rock mine carries a few grams of uranium per tonne, as most granites do; so do the heavy minerals of Cox’s Bazar beach sands.
- Antique shops sometimes stock uranium (“vaseline”) glass, which flashes green under an ultraviolet torch — a harmless little souvenir of the nuclear age.

Why is Uranium important in Bangladesh?
The full study page connects Uranium to Bangladeshi life — school labs, local industries, health and the NCTB syllabus. This quick-answer page is the fast summary; the element page is the full story.
Where will I meet Uranium in the NCTB exam?
Questions on Uranium's uses are a recurring pattern in Class 9–10 and HSC chemistry. The element page ends with six exam-style questions in both languages — practise those and this pattern stops costing marks.
