Experiments you can watch happen

Three classic experiments — animated, bilingual and safe. Run each one, read the equation, and take the exam tie-in with you.

Sodium — skates around, melts into a shiny ball, may end in a small flame.

2 Na\mathrm{2\,Na} + 2 H2O\mathrm{2\,H_{2}O} → 2 NaOH\mathrm{2\,NaOH} + H2\mathrm{H_{2}}

Going down group 1 the outer electron sits further away and is lost more easily, so reactivity climbs from lithium to cesium — the trend examiners never tire of.

A word on real labs

These animations show what happens — but the alkali-metal demo is a teacher-only experiment (safety glasses, screen, tweezers, small pieces only). Never try experiment 1 at home or school by yourself.
