Uses of Thallium (Tl) in Everyday Life
From the Thallium page's study notes: Thallium (Tl) serves in alloys, infrastructure and the technologies of daily life. The full list, with Bangladesh examples, sits below.
Looking for Thallium's uses without wading through a whole chapter? Here is the direct answer first, then the tables and derivations examiners want to see. Every number on this page comes from the same engine that powers the interactive table. Need the whole picture instead — history, characteristics, uses, exam questions? Every use below comes straight from the full Thallium study page, where each point also carries the chemistry behind it and an exam-style question. Skim the list here; open the full page when revision time comes.
Uses of Thallium in the study notes
- Nuclear cardiology: thallium-201 chloride is injected for heart stress tests — mimicking potassium, healthy heart muscle absorbs it and lights up the gamma-camera image of the blood supply.
- Thallium-doped scintillator crystals — NaI(Tl) and CsI(Tl) — convert invisible gamma rays and X-rays into countable flashes of light inside hospital gamma cameras and security scanners.
- Infrared optics: crystals of thallium bromide–iodide transmit long-wavelength infrared, serving thermal-imaging lenses, -laser windows and infrared spectrometers.
- The former rodenticide thallium sulfate — banned in most countries once its human toll was tallied; it survives mainly in crime fiction and forensic textbooks as the classic “poisoner’s poison”.
Where you meet it
- A heart patient leaving the nuclear-medicine wing of a big city hospital may have just had a thallium-201 scan map the blood flow through the heart muscle.
- Airport baggage scanners and hospital gamma cameras owe their light-flashing detector crystals to a pinch of thallium doping.
- Crime-fiction shelves keep thallium famous: in The Pale Horse the victims’ burning feet and shedding hair are the textbook symptoms of its poisoning.

Why is Thallium important in Bangladesh?
The full study page connects Thallium to Bangladeshi life — school labs, local industries, health and the NCTB syllabus. This quick-answer page is the fast summary; the element page is the full story.
Where will I meet Thallium in the NCTB exam?
Questions on Thallium's uses are a recurring pattern in Class 9–10 and HSC chemistry. The element page ends with six exam-style questions in both languages — practise those and this pattern stops costing marks.
