Solute and solvent — দ্রব ও দ্রাবক

Quick answer

The solute dissolves, the solvent dissolves it — in sugar water, sugar is the solute and water is the solvent.

Definition

In any solution, the solute is the substance that dissolves, and the solvent is the substance that does the dissolving. In sugar water, sugar is the solute and water the solvent; in fizzy drinks, carbon dioxide dissolves in water. Usually the component present in the larger amount is called the solvent, and water is called the universal solvent because so many substances dissolve in it. Water's polar molecules tug on charged or polar particles and surround them.

For example

In an ORS sachet the salts and glucose are the solutes and the glass of water is the solvent; drink it after diarrhoea and your body's salt-water balance recovers.
